Sustainability

Sustainability and sailing can go together we think. The building of a yacht has an unavoidable impact but the impact during it’s lifetime can be reduced. This is what we tried in the design.

Antifouling.

Antifouling paints on yachts often contain biocides. The paints are used to prevent growth on the hull, below the water surface. The downside of the biocide is clear.

We have chosen for coppercoat on the bottem since it is non ablative and stands for a long time on the hull. There is no need to redo this for a while. Copper has impact but seems to us less harmful then active biocides.

Diesel, yes or no?

Oceanvolt SP15 Sustainability

The propulsion of our JPK comes from an Oceanvolt Servoprop SP15. Power of the prop is 15 kW and it comes from a 29 kWh MG Lithium-Ion batterybank.

We would love to be full electric, but for safety reasons and for time keeping there is a diesel generator on board. The diesel assures extra mileage and speed when necessary.

And yes, we have an electric motor on the dinghy. And cooking is electric.

So yes, but less.

Oceanvolt SP15

The Oceanvolt SP15 is not just for propulsion. It is as well a hydrogenerator and, with the best performance on the market. The propeller blades adjust automatically on the boat speed, to maintain an optimum between regeneration and water resistance.

Another benefit of electric propulsion is the reduction of noise. Yes, the diesel generator does make noise, but it has better insulation and less running hours are required.

Longer range.

No gas stations on an ocean

There are no gas stations on an ocean. Crossing an ocean on a diesel engine takes a lot. For most sailing yachts too much to store. But not for Oceanvolt, as it takes renewable energy. Energy is everywhere.

Less weight, is less energy.

JPK39FC

Since the JPK39FC is a light displacement yacht. It moves on also in very light winds. No engine required with spinnaker or gennaker. So less consumption.

Less weight, is more energy.

JPK 39 FC

The JPK moves faster in light wind and faster in general. Above 8 Knots boat speed the yacht starts to plane. Due to the reduction of drag it gains even more speed with more hydrogeneration as a result.

JPK and Oceanvolt is a perfect match.

Solar.

solar panels on a JPK 39 FC

The batteries are not only fed by the SP15 but also from solar panels. Nice at anchor.

Benefits for people and the planet.
